Medium

Publish stories to a Medium profile or a publication you write for, with a lead picture, tags and an original link. Only accounts that already have an integration token can connect.

Edit on GitHub

Staqly publishes stories to Medium through its REST API, signed in with an integration token. The post's text is the story in Markdown and its Title setting the headline. A published target links to the story on medium.com.

Medium stopped issuing integration tokens and no longer takes new API apps. Only an account that already has a token can connect; Medium doesn't offer another way to publish from outside.

Connect the account

  1. On medium.com, open Settings → Security and apps → Integration tokens and copy a token you made earlier (Medium shows the token list only to accounts that have one).
  2. In staqly: Channels → Add channel → Medium, paste it as Integration token.
  3. To publish to a publication you write for instead of your profile, enter its link (https://medium.com/your-publication), its name or its id as Publication. Staqly checks that the account writes for it and, if not, lists the publications it does write for. Connect the account twice to publish to both.

The channel shows your name and @username (with the publication: its name and @username in your-publication).

Limits

Textno limit; Markdown (headings, lists, links, code, quotes)
Mediaone picture (JPEG, PNG, GIF or TIFF): staqly uploads it to Medium and puts it under the title
Titlerequired, up to 100 characters

Medium shows a story's title only when its content starts with it, so staqly writes the title as the story's first heading. Don't repeat it in the text.

Settings per post

SettingWhat it does
Title (title)The story's headline (required)
Tags (tags)Up to 3 tags of at most 25 characters (Medium's API ignores the rest)
Original link (canonical_url)Where the article first appeared, so search engines credit it
Publish as (publish_status)public (default), unlisted (only people with the link) or draft

In a publication, the editors may hold the story for review whatever Publish as says.

When publishing fails

Medium saysStaqly does
The token was revoked or is invalidMarks the channel Needs reconnect; paste a valid token
Rate limit, Medium unavailableRetries through the job queue (after 1, 5, then 15 minutes)
A refused story (publication not found, no permission)Fails the target with Medium's reason

Medium has no way to ask "did this story go out?", and a new attempt would make a second story. So when staqly sent the story but its answer never came, the target fails with "may have published" instead of trying again: check your profile before you post it again.
