Tumblr
Publish text, pictures and a video to any of your Tumblr blogs, with the post's tags. What to register with Tumblr and how picking blogs works.
Staqly publishes to Tumblr blogs through API v2: it signs in with OAuth 2.0, you pick the blogs to post to, and each post goes out in Tumblr's Neue Post Format, its pictures and video uploaded in the same request. A published target links to the post on tumblr.com.
What you need
A Tumblr app with OAuth 2.0, registered once per server. Its keys go into the server's
environment (.env), the same way locally and in the cloud; a workspace can also use its own app
(see Developer apps).
Create the app
At tumblr.com/oauth/apps, register an application with:
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| OAuth2 redirect URLs | your dashboard's /channels/callback/tumblr, for example http://localhost:8080/channels/callback/tumblr locally or https://staqly.example.com/channels/callback/tumblr |
Copy the OAuth consumer key and secret key.
Give staqly the keys
Put them in the server's environment and restart it:
PROVIDER_TUMBLR_CLIENT_ID=your-oauth-consumer-key
PROVIDER_TUMBLR_CLIENT_SECRET=your-secret-key- Docker:
docker run ... --env-file .env ghcr.io/staqly/staqly:latest, or-e PROVIDER_TUMBLR_CLIENT_ID=.... - Binary: export both in your shell, then run
staqly serveorstaqly service install(the service keepsPROVIDER_*settings).
Until both are set, Tumblr shows as soon in Channels → Add channel.
PROVIDER_TUMBLR_ENABLED=false hides it altogether.
Connect and pick blogs
Connect with Tumblr opens tumblr.com, where the person signs in and allows the app. Staqly asks for these scopes:
| Scope | Why |
|---|---|
basic | Read the account and its blogs |
write | Publish posts |
offline_access | Stay connected (Tumblr's access lasts 42 minutes; staqly renews it) |
Staqly then lists the account's blogs, the main one and any side blogs: pick one or more, and each becomes its own channel, named after the blog. Connecting the same blog again reconnects its channel.
Limits
| Text | 4,096 characters; each paragraph becomes a text block |
| Media | up to 10 files: pictures and at most one video |
| Posts | Tumblr limits posts (250) and uploads per blog and account a day |
The post's tags become Tumblr tags (without #).
Comments
Tumblr's API cannot reply to a post, so a post's thread is not sent to Tumblr.
When publishing fails
| Tumblr says | Staqly does |
|---|---|
| The sign-in expired or was revoked (401) | Marks the channel Needs reconnect and fails the target; reconnect it from the row's menu |
| Rate limit (429), Tumblr unavailable (5xx, 503), a video still processing from the last post | Retries through the job queue (after 1, 5, then 15 minutes) |
| The daily post or upload limit, a file format Tumblr does not take, a blog that is gone | Fails the target with Tumblr's reason; retrying would not help, so it does not |
When staqly sent a post but its answer never came, it looks at the blog's latest posts for one that starts the same way: if it is there, that is the post; if not, the target fails with "may have published" instead of trying again. Check the blog before you post it again.
